A little preparation. A better day out.
Plan the day.
Pack with confidence.
Water? Snacks? The extra layer you almost forgot? Start with the outing, then work through a practical family checklist.

What are we packing for?
Choose a starting list. Add or adapt supplies for your people, destination and conditions.

Family day hike
Choose a route for the least-experienced person. A shorter outing with an easy turnaround is a perfectly good adventure.
A packed bag does not make every day a hiking day. Change the plan when heat, storms, closures or your group’s energy make the outing unsuitable. Do not depend on unconfirmed trail water.

First camping weekend
Start with a developed campground and a short stay. This is a car-camping starter list, not a backcountry packing plan.
Borrow before you buy. Try a borrowed tent at home and check that all its parts are present. Follow campground rules for food storage; a cooler alone may not meet them.
02 / Your checklist
Arizona road trip
Keep the driving realistic, plan rest stops and leave room for a change of plans. For a trail stop, take the hiking essentials too.
A trail stop is still a hike. Leave the car with your hiking supplies, even when the walk looks short. Review the day-hike list before you set off.
A thoughtful starting point
Prepare for the place you’re going.
